Clitoria ternatea, commonly known asAsian pigeonwings, bluebellvine,blue pea,butterfly pea,cordofan peaandDarwin pea,is a plant species belonging to theFabaceae family. It is a typical tropical vine that blooms throughout the year. Clitoria ternatea distributed to Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Fujian, Hainan, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Guangxi and Guangdong, etc. In Southeast Asia, Clitoria ternatea flower is used as a natural food colouring, Taiwanese also began to use it in cooking meals. In traditionalAyurvedic medicine, it is ascribed various qualities including memory enhancing, nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, tranquilizing, and sedative properties.
Clitoria ternatea is rich in Flavonoid, anthocyanins and phenolic compounds, which can stimulate antioxidant activity and help reduce oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
